More people today can avoid the need for dentures as they grow older. No longer does the need for false teeth go along with growing older.

In fact, there normally is no reason why you cannot keep your teeth for your entire lifetime if you make regular visits to the dentist, maintain a healthy diet and maintain good dental hygiene practices.

Dexterity and Arthritis

People who suffer from arthritis or have other problems with dexterity may find it difficult to maintain good oral hygiene. Fortunately, there are dental devices and holders that are available that are made to make it easier to grasp and control brushing and flossing. We have battery-operated brushes available at our office that many people find to be helpful, as well as floss threaders, etc. Feel free to discuss your concerns with your hygienist.

You can sometimes use items around the house to help, too. Inserting the handle of your toothbrush into a small rubber ball or extending the handle of your toothbrush by attaching a small piece of plastic might give the results you need.

Sometimes a suggestion may be made to use a water pick or irrigator. Water picks use powerful bursts of water to blast away food particles and can reach all areas of your mouth.

Older adults can experience an increase in periodontal disease, dry mouth or oral cancer. It is important to come for regular dental exams and cleanings to keep your teeth for a lifetime.
