There is an increase of people, especially teens, who have pierced tongues, lips and cheeks. What may not be common knowledge is that these piercings can be dangerous.

The mouth contains millions of bacteria, and infection is a common complication of oral piercing. Other possible side effects are pain and swelling. Since the most popular site for piercing is the mouth, swelling could be large enough to close off the airway. Piercings can also cause uncontrollable bleeding or nerve damage.

Even if the piercing does not cause any of the above, there are other hazards that could be presented:

              • You can easily choke on any piercing that becomes loose in your mouth.

              • Teeth can be chipped or cracked from contact with the jewelry.

It is important to realize that piercings are not just a fashion statement, but that there are major oral health consequences involved.
